The bamboo rod is still used today, but we mainly use graphite and fiber carbon fishing rods<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">As much as we know, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fishing_reel#History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>first fishing reel<\/strong><\/a> was made in <strong>1195 AD in China<\/strong> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Song_dynasty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Song dynasty<\/strong><\/a>. The first ancient fishing reels were made purely out of wood, and as technology progressed, inventors started to add other materials to the reel, such as <strong>metal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">For example, the reel handle was <strong>wooden<\/strong>, while the rest was <strong>metal<\/strong> and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><strong>Fishing Equipment Needed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul type=\"video\" class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<li>Rod<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Line<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swivels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leader line<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lead<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hooks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">No matter where you are, your local fishing and hunting store should have all the gear to make an <strong>inexpensive survival fishing kit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">From a <strong>survival perspective<\/strong>, you don't need a rod to catch fish; a reel with the other gear will <strong>suffice<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">If you use a rod with the reel, a 3-meter <a href=\"https:\/\/hikingandfishing.com\/fiberglass-vs-graphite-vs-composite-vs-bamboo-fishing-rods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>graphite rod<\/strong><\/a> will be enough. Ask the store manager for a decently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tacklewarehouse.com\/guides\/rodselection.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>strong rod<\/strong><\/a> because you can use it for years without worrying it will <strong>break<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Fishing for smaller fish with a <strong>heavy rod<\/strong> isn't optional, but in <strong>survival scenarios<\/strong>, it is better to have something you can <strong>rely on<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Pick a <a href=\"https:\/\/fishingsensei.com\/gear\/rods\/species\/best-trout-fishing-rods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>light rod<\/strong><\/a> only if you target small fish, like <strong>trout<\/strong>. <strong>Graphite rods<\/strong> are the <strong>least expensive, <\/strong>and with <strong>care<\/strong>, they can be very durable too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Look out for the end of the rod because it is known that breaks occur from top to<strong> bottom<\/strong> more. Always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Idj_l5KCm-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>disassemble<\/strong><\/a> the rod when moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">You should look for a <a href=\"https:\/\/fishingbooker.com\/blog\/types-of-fishing-reels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>semi-big reel<\/strong><\/a>. It's <strong>inexpensive,<\/strong> and it is considered to be the most <strong>versatile<\/strong> line type. Look for around <strong>300 meters<\/strong> of line; the thickness should be from <strong>0.24mm to 0.30mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Choose <strong>heavier line<\/strong> only in the scenario that you are after <strong>bigger fish<\/strong>. If you go with a thicker line, consider buying an <strong>enormous reel<\/strong> (5000-8000).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Next, you will need some <a href=\"https:\/\/hikingandfishing.com\/types-of-fishing-swivels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>fishing swivels<\/strong><\/a> of sizes <strong>8 to 12<\/strong>. The swivel is not complicated, but it is a <strong>crucial component<\/strong> to set up the rig easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Using <strong>another line<\/strong> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Leader-Line\/s?k=Leader+Line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>leader line<\/strong><\/a> is optional because you can always use the <strong>main line<\/strong>. The only <strong>benefit<\/strong> of having a separate leader line is using other materials, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berkley-fishing.com\/berkley-ae-why-use-fluorocarbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>fluorocarbon<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>less visible<\/strong> to the fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><strong>Fluorocarbon leader<\/strong> usually comes in 50 meters packaging, which is more expensive than monofilament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">If you are fishing on a <strong>lake<\/strong>, a 20-gram <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fishing_sinker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>lead-fishing sinker<\/strong><\/a> will suffice. However, you can use heavier lead for <strong>longer throws<\/strong>. On a <strong>river<\/strong>, you will need to consider the <strong>current<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">If the river is low, you can always fish the <a href=\"https:\/\/lelandfly.com\/pages\/what-is-an-eddy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>still water<\/strong><\/a> with a 20-gram lead. But, in reality, for river fishing, a survivalist should have a wide array of leads, from 20 grams to 100 grams or even more, and adapt to the river's condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.takemefishing.org\/how-to-fish\/fishing-gear-and-tackle\/how-to-choose-fishing-hooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hooks<\/strong><\/a> should <strong>match<\/strong> the size of the fish you are targeting, as the hookup rate will be the <strong>highest that way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">If you still don't know about the hook size, figure out what fish live in the <strong>body of water<\/strong> you would fish in a <strong>survival situation<\/strong> and adapt the hook size to the size of the <strong>fish's mouth<\/strong>.
